My dad, Sgt Maj Jannie Smuts, who served with 1 South African Irish Regiment throughout WW2 passed away yesterday morning just shy of his 95th birthday. He fought with the SA Irish through East Africa and in the Western Desert. Unlike many of his brothers, he survived Sidi Rezegh because he was on a sergeants course in Cairo at the time his unit was overrun and destroyed by Rommel's panzers.
He was an awesome dad who taught me about loyalty, hard work, family and how to man the hell up. What I am today is largely because of him.
He was truly the last of the Old Breed and I miss him more than words can express. I love you Ouboss.
